Rare Alternative Artwork Proofs For The Eurythmics Album Savage

We are honoured to present to you this set of previously unseen alternative concept artwork for the Eurythmics album Savage.
This artwork has recently surfaced into the collectors market, and was originally used to pitch as an alternative to Lawrence Steven’s artwork. The record company, RCA BMG, along with Annie and Dave wanted a grittier side to the promotion of Savage, so sought an alternative concept to that presented by Lawrence Stevens. In the end this concept work shown here was rejected in favour of Lawrence’s work, as Annie felt this went just a little too far from the image she wanted to portray.

The collection is made up of 3 main parts: Fly Posters for outdoors, point of sale and shop display material and publicity and PR materials and then as an additional bonus, we reveal the cover on the Australian promotional copy of the Savage LP, followed by some old interviews and collectables. Most of the concept artwork throughout is presented on silver foam board about 36″ in height, with a handwritten note indicating what the final piece would be along with dimensions.

First we start with the flyposters, designed to be a reveal over 2 weeks with the initial portrait of Annie silhouted out, and the following week, the black would be removed to reveal a full picture of Annie. You can just make out on the orange label on Savage the words Peel To Reveal. There is no doubt that these posters would have looked pretty striking!

So now lets looks at the point of sale material for use within the record shops themselves, we start with some window stickers which are actually made from acetate, 2 Eurythmics name boards one for the album and one with the name, a large cutout centre piece and a different in store poster.

Completing the in store promotion, we have this amazing mobile and counterstand, the mobile is about 20″ tall and the counterstand is an absolutely stunning piece and sits at 16″ tall. The counterstand was designed to hold a stack of 7″ singles.

Here we present a full size mockup of a fold out advertisement for the album in the UK Music Industry paper Music Week, using an old copy of the magazine the designer has created a sample of how the fold out pages would work, starting with a one page reveal that opens to the right to revael a double page spread.

Next is the presspack concept which comprises of a mock up of the pack itself with a fold out cover, and then the large collection of contents within the pack itself, including photographs, a set of stickers and a biography entitled Biorythmics. It is designed to be sealed with a sticker on the front, with the two flaps opening to reveal the 2 Annie’s on a red background, with the larger portrait of Annie in the background.

And here we have the contents of the presspack, the cover of Biorythmics which can be seen in full in the next tab, a sheet of stickers and 3 Black and White promo photo’s which would have been more relevant to the final artwork if chosen.

The final piece here is a 4 page biography of Eurythmics entitled Biorythmics, the text is the standard Latin Lorem Ipsum dummy text to show the concept and utilising some additional imagery from the Savage photo shoot.
